Our Curriculum - PrintACar Challenge

Two students from Laburnum PS participated in the finals for the Quantum PrintACar competition. Ernest from grade 5 and Joseph from grade 2 have worked for many months designing and creating a car that would enter the competition. The boys were coached by Ernest’s father, David, who has a back ground in 3D printing. The boys designed their car and printed it, they also had to produce a poster explaining their journey.

They competed in the first round of competitions in August and were fortunate to receive a wildcard entry to the finals. The final competition was held on Friday 9th October, at Melbourne University and the boys competed against 14 secondary schools and one primary school. After many nerve wracking races the winners were announced late in the afternoon.

We came with no expectations other than to be competitive, enjoy our day and learn more about 3D printing and design. Can you imagine our surprise and delight when they announced Laburnum as the winners? Ernest and Joseph have won a brand new 3D printer for Laburnum PS!  A huge thank you must go to David and Jan T for coaching and supporting the boys, they would never have been able to achieve so much without their guidance and tireless patience.
